If you are learning German and want to know more about the rich literary tradition of the Germans, you would come across a wide range of talented writers. German literature has a long and influential history, with writers who have made significant contributions to world literature. In this blog, we will introduce you to some essential German writers that every student of German should know

Johann Wolfgang von Goehte (1749-1832):

Goethe is often considered one of the greatest literary figures of the Western world. His masterpiece "Faust" is a timeless work that deals with the themes of ambition, morality and the human condition. "The Sorrows of Young Werther" is another important work, known for its exploration of unrequited love. Goethe's writing is both captivating and profound, making him a must-read for students of German. Recommendation for first reading: "The Lament of Young Werther"

Franz Kafka (1883-1924):

Kafka's works are known for their surreal and existential themes. "Metamorphosis" tells the story of Gregor Samsa, who wakes up one morning transformed into a giant insect. This novella explores alienation and the absurdity of existence. "The Process" and "The Castle" are other essential works that offer a unique view of a world that stifles free thought. Recommendation: Kafka's short stories

Fridrich von Schiller (1759-1805):

Schiller is known for his contributions to German classical literature. His dramatic works, such as "William Tell" and "Don Carlos", are celebrated for their exploration of freedom, justice and the human spirit. Schiller's eloquent poetry, including the "Ode to Joy," also played a significant role in German culture and history. He is considered the greatest German poet after Goethe. Recommendation: "Robbers"

Hermann Hesse (1877-1962):

Hesse's writing often delves into the realms of spirituality and self-discovery. "Siddhartha" is a philosophical novel that follows the path of a man seeking enlightenment. Steppenwolf explores the duality of human nature. Hesse's works offer profound insight into the human experience. Recommendation: "The Glass Bead Game."

Thomas Mann (1875-1955):

Mann is known for his epic novels, including "The Buddenbrokes" and "The Magic Mountain". His writing combines social commentary with psychological depth. "Death in Venice" is another significant work that deals with themes of obsession and artistic aspirations. Exiled from Germany during the Third Reich, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in the warm home of America. "Magic Mountain" is a masterpiece of world literature, and so it is my recommendation for the first reading.

Ginter Gras (1927-2015):

ree

Čitanje njihovih dela obogatiće vaše putovanje učenja jezika i pružiti dublje razumevanje sveta nemačkog govornog područja. Srećno čitanje!
