If you are going to Germany with the intention of starting a life there, studying there or simply want to explore the country as a tourist, you need to know when and where you are guaranteed to have a good time. And where better to feel the spirit of their culture than at festivals? Fortunately for you, Germany has a mountain of festivals throughout the year that will not leave you indifferent. From music and exhibitions to food and drink, there is something for everyone. So let's start.

1. Oktoberfest, Munich

I know, you've probably all heard of this festival, but there's a reason why it's so popular! If you are a beer drinker, Oktoberfest will not disappoint you, considering that beer is the main thing you will be 'tasting'. It takes place in the capital of Bavaria, Munich, and lasts approximately two weeks (date for 2023 is 16.09. to 03.10.). Originally, the reason for the celebration was the royal wedding back in 1810, but the celebration soon turned into the biggest folk festival in the world. Everywhere you turn you'll see dirndls and leather pants, and at every turn there will be a tent with gallons of beer waiting for you, all with traditional Bavarian music blaring from giant speakers all day long. And those who want a bit of adventure will have a mountain of crazy rides at their disposal!

2. Wurstmarkt, Bad Durkheim

Now let's move on to wine. Every year, at the beginning of September, Bad Durkheim attracts over 500,000 people, and if you're wondering what they're celebrating, the answer is wine and sausages. This folk festival dates back to the 12th century, when the farmers and wineries of Bad Durkheim sold their products to pilgrims heading to the Michaelskapelle. Today, around 36 wineries from the region participate in this festival. You have hundreds of food stalls, an amusement park (carnival rides), fireworks as well as wine halls.

3. Karneval, Cologne

If you are a fan of colors, costumes and parades, then Carnival is the right choice for you. It takes place at the beginning of February and lasts about 6 days. At the very beginning, a lively street parade awaits you with a large number of people dressed in twisted costumes and loud music that can be heard from every pub and brewery. You will have the opportunity to see part of the German tradition through numerous performances, dances and music. The parties and street shows go well into the night, so get ready for a crazy time!

4. Reeperbahn, Hamburg

This is musical madness to say the least. Four days, over 400 concerts across the city. Yes, the festival is not only held in one location, but the bars, clubs and other famous music venues of Hamburg host numerous artists who are given the opportunity to present themselves and potentially gain popularity. In addition to concerts, there are also art exhibitions, film screenings in the St. Pauli district, as well as numerous other artistic activities. And not to mention the variety - from underground clubs to the Imperial Theater and St Paul's Cathedral - there is something for everyone's taste.

5. Dan jedinstva, 3. oktobar, Berlin

The main and largest national festival in Germany is held in Berlin to commemorate the unification of West and East Germany in 1989. Although basically every city celebrates this day, in Berlin it is something special. You have numerous outdoor concerts held at the Brandenburg Gate, then there are parades, and you can also see the art and historical exhibits that are set up along the remains of the Berlin Wall. In other words, a lot of effort is put into making this festival truly enchanting. If you get the chance, be sure to visit Berlin on October 3rd, you won't regret it.
